ON1 Photo RAW: The First New RAW Processor in a Decade

For quite a while now there has been a very limited range of software for easily editing RAW files, but ON1 is hoping to change that with what it calls ‘the first all-new RAW processor and non-destructive photo editor to be released in more than a decade’.

Although this new offering builds on ON1’s previous software such as ON1 Photo 10, Photo RAW will be a standalone app, purpose-built for dealing with ‘today’s super-megapixel cameras and high-performance computer graphics systems’.

‘Photo RAW will be the world’s fastest, most flexible, and easiest-to-use RAW processor and photo editor on the market’, they claim, and will ‘open 50-megapixel images in a fraction of a second on a standard PC or Mac’.

This all sounds very ambitious, and if they can achieve what they say they can, this will certainly be an offering worth looking for many photographers, especially those who are interested in an alternative to Photoshop and Lightroom.

It will be interesting to see if ON1 can live up to its bold claims and provide a strong competitor to the established names in this space.

Photo RAW is built with today’s huge RAW files in mind, while many competitors are saddled with legacy codebases, claims ON1. With this custom-built software, RAW edits can be performed ‘in real-time, without slider lag or frustrating waits for redraw’.

It certainly sounds compelling, and although there isn’t any word on pricing yet, it will be interesting to see if ON1 can live up to its bold claims and provide a strong competitor to the established names in this space.

Photo Raw should be available in third quarter of 2016. For more information, visit the ON1 website here.
