Sony’s 12-24mm F/2.8 is a wide-angle game-changer

The world’s widest full-frame AF lens with a constant f/2.8 aperture should be on every Sony shooters wishlist…

Sony are getting better and better at pulling the covers off marquee lenses that set the standard and the brand’s latest release is no different as Sony have announced the FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM (model SEL1224GM) – a lens Sony say is the ‘world’s widest full-frame zoom with a constant F2.8 aperture.

Slotting into Sony’s acclaimed G Master range, the 12-24mm optic will be of great interest to landscape and architecture photographers, who will take advantage of the ultra wide-angle 12mm wide end to stretch perspective of foreground interest. Believe it not, the 12-24mm GM is the 57th lens in Sony’s E-mount system and now means that G Master optics cover focal lengths from 12-200mm.

Sony introduces the new FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM…

Packing a lot of glass into a fairly compact lens, the FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM features three XA (extreme aspherical) elements including the largest XA element ever made for an Alpha brand lens. These XA elements are joined by three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and two Super ED glass elements, which aim to control chromatic aberration and combine to deliver corner-to-corner clarity while minimising colour fringing.

Featuring a closest focusing distance of just 28 cm throughout the zoom range, photographers will be able to get up close to the subject and a 9-blade circular aperture will deliver impressive bokeh. The lens is powered by no less than four high-speed, high-thrust XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors (two XD Linear Motors for each of the lens’s focus groups).

Filters can be slipped in at the rear of the lens and the FE 12-24mm benefits from weather-sealing, making it suitable for the rigours of everyday professional use. The curved front element benefits from Sony’s new Nano AR Coating II technology which reduces ghosting and flare.

The constant F2.8 maximum aperture throughout the focal range also makes the FE 12-24mm a good choice for shooting movies and tipping the scales at 847g, the lens should be able to be used with most gimbals. Other features include a customisable focus-hold button and focus-mode switch. Available from August 2020, the  FE 12-24mm will carry a price-tag of  $2,999.99 USD / €3300.
