Olympus has pulled the covers off its newest lens and the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45mm F4.0 PRO looks to offer both versatility and quality to Micro Four-Thirds photographers. Thanks to the 2x crop on MFT cameras, the lens actually offers an equivalent focal length, making it suitable for everything from wide-angle landscapes, to portraiture and close up imagery.

As suggested by the name, the 12-45mm F4.0 is part of Olympus’ PRO range of optics and benefits from some serious weather sealing that makes the lens dustproof, splashproof and even freezeproof to -10°C, making it suitable for use by professionals in harsh environments.

As you’d expect from Olympus kit, the design of the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45mm F4.0 PRO is small and lightweight, tipping the scales at just 254g and measuring 63.4mm x 70mm, meaning it’s easy to transport and won’t take up much room in your kit bag – essential for travel photographers who are tight on luggage space.

Those who like to shoot close up photography will be pleased to hear the lens features a maximum magnification of 0.5x (35mm equivalent) across the entire zoom range and also benefits from a closest focusing distance of just 12 cm at the wide-angle end, and 23 cm at the telephoto end of the focal range.

Available from April/late March depending on location, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45mm F4.0 PRO lens carries a price-tag of $649.99 /£599.
