Olympus gets tough with the TG-6

Olympus has announced the latest camera from its Tough series of rugged point and shoot compacts. The TG-6 seems to be the most rugged Tough camera to date as it is waterproof to a depth of 15m, dustproof, shockproof to 2.1m, crushproof up to 100kg, freezeproof to -10°C, and features a dual-pane protective glass construction for enhanced anti-fogging performance.

The TG-6 could be perfect to pack in your suitcase come holiday time.

What’s more, new accessories enhance the ruggedness ever further with an optional attachable lens barrier (LB-T01) adding more protection from scratches to the lens, and the optional PT-059 underwater casing enabling images and movies to be captured up to depths of 45 metres below the waterline.

The rugged TG-6 can shoot RAW stills.

Also new is an improved LCD with a 1.04 million dot resolution, a built-in 2x digital tele-converter to allow for a maximum of 8x zoom, Anti-Reflective (AR) coating on the sensor sealing glass which Olympus says reduce ghosts and flaring and a new ‘Underwater Microscope’ mode that will shoot close-ups just 1 cm from the end of the lens – perfect for when you’re exploring the shallows on your next holiday.

The TG-6 is freeze proof and water proof so it can be used in harsh conditions.

A lot of the specs are similar to the older TG-5, including the 1/2.3-inch sensor that delivers 12-megapixels of resolution, the 4x optical zoom lens that delivers a 25-100mm focal range and impressive 4K video (30p) movie shooting capabilities. The TG-6 does include an improved Focus Stacking mode where users can select between three and ten shots that will be merged together to deliver front to back sharpness in the frame.

The rear LCD has seena jump in resolution and there’s also a 12-megapixel sensor.

Powered by the Olympus’ TruePic VIII image processor, the TG-6 shoots RAW images and the lens features a fast maximum aperture of f/2. GPS technology can record the location you captured an image, while sphotos can be quickly transferred to a smart device using the Wi-Fi technology.

The TG-6 also features GPS technology to record locations
