Canon launches the bokehlicious RF 85mm

Canon has pulled the covers off its latest new lens; the RF 85mm F1.2L USM – a prime lens built for Canon’s new range of full-frame mirrorless cameras (the EOS R and EOS RP) and is the fifth RF optic to be brought to market.

Canon introduces the RF 85mm f/1.2L USM…

With a focal length of 85mm, the lens is sure to be a huge hit with portrait and wedding photographers as the focal length will offer a flattering perspective of subjects. Plus, the optic also benefits from an ultra-fast maximum aperture of f/1.2, enabling photographer to create incredibly shallow depths of field.

The lens boasts an ultra-fast max aperture of f/1.2.

Canon explains the ultra-wide aperture transmits 50 per cent more light than a f/1.4 lens enabling photography in low light conditions; down to -6EV (EOS R) and -5EV (EOS RP). The lens uses the same ring type USM motor as the RF 50mm F1.2L USM and sports Canon’s L-series weather sealing to protect the lens against adverse rain and dust.

With a weather-sealed body, the lens has a clostest focusing distance of 85cm.

Built around a 9-aperture blade design, the RF 85mm F1.2L USM also features Canon’s Blue Spectrum Refractive (BR) technology, which works to reduce chromatic aberrations and was first seen on the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM.

The RF 85mm F1.2L USM includes a control ring that enables the photographer to quickly access and adjust Tv, Av and ISO settings for quicker operation during a shoot and the lens features a minimum focusing distance of 2.79 feet/0.85 meters.

Launching the lens to the press, Canon included an example image showcasing the quality the new optic can achieve that was taken by Canon Ambassador, Félicia Sisco, who said; “The new RF 85mm F1.2L USM is better than I could have imagined.”
