Here Are The Top Photography Products of 2016, According to EISA

EISA (the European Imaging and Sound Association) has had a close relationship with photography since it awarded its first ‘Camera of the Year’ award in 1982. Originally formed by the editors of five of the top photography magazines of the era, the body has grown to cover multiple product categories, including many in photography.

Canon and Sony were the biggest winners across multiple product categories, although there were two awards each for Olympus and Panasonic and individual lens awards for Sigma and Tamron.

Canon’s 80D took home the top prize in the ‘DSLR Camera’ category, with the 1D-X Mark II – the camera of choice for many of this year’s Olympic photographers – named as the ‘Professional DSLR Camera’ of the year. The DSLR lens category went to the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L, a lens that has been praised widely throughout the photography community. Nikon also had one winner here, walking away with the ‘Prosumer DSLR Camera’ award for the D500, a camera that we loved.

The mirrorless categories, however, were dominated by Sony products. The overall ‘Photo & Video Camera’ award went to the Sony A7S II, with Sony also taking the ‘Prosumer Compact System Camera’ and ‘Premium Compact Camera’ awards for the a6300 and RX1R II, respectively. The ‘Professional Compact System Lens’ award also went to Sony, awarded to the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM lens, which we reviewed earlier this year.

Fuji, however, were the winners in the remaining mirrorless categories. The powerhouse X-Pro 2 was awarded ‘Professional Compact System Camera’, while ‘Compact System Zoom Lens’ went to the Fujinon XF100-400mm f.4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR.

Olympus picked up the ‘Consumer Compact System Camera’ award for the OM-D E-M10 Mark II, and also beat out competition from GoPro and Yi to take the ‘Action Camcorder’ category for their innovative TG-Tracker.

‘DSLR Lens’ went to Tamron for the SP 85mm f/1.8 DI VC USD, and ‘DSLR Zoom Lens’ went to Sigma for the excellent 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art.
