Video documentarian Mick Kalber of Tropical Visions Video has captured perhaps the biggest smiley face emanating from the Pu’u O’o crater in Hawaii.
The footage was captured last Thursday when Kalber took to the skies on a helicopter tour operated by Paradise Helicopters. The aerial video shows the lava surfacing from within the crater in the shape of a giant emoji.
The image lingered for only a moment before the lava spewed forth and eventually made its way down the slope and into the Pacific Ocean.
Kīlauea is a massive shield volcano, and the most active of the five which form the island of Hawaii. The Pu’u O’o crater, located in Kīlauea’s eastern rift zone has continuously erupted since 1983 making the site a popular and relatively safe place for visitors to see lava close up.
