‘Master of Photography’ TV Show Names Leica as Kit Provider

Leica have announced that they are to be the technical provider for the upcoming talent show on Sky TV, Master of Photography.

The programme, according to their press materials, “aims to promote photography in all its forms of expression.” Really it’s the newest addition to the ever-widening pool of ‘The American Idol of…’ genre. Think Hell’s KitchenBritish Bake Off or Project Runway. The show will feature a mix of 12 amateur and professional photographers who’ll be competing with each other over the course of 8 episodes to claim €150,000 (US$165,000) prize and the chance of holding their own solo exhibition.

Though that does all sound a tiny bit cringe-worthy, there are some interesting potential features to the programme. During the series, the competitors will shoot in-studio and on location across a range of locations throughout Europe including Rome, Ireland, London, and Berlin. The panel of judges also has a nice mix; oft-times controversial Italian commercial photographer Oliviero Toscani, German urban architecture photographer Rut Blees Luxemburg, and British portrait photographer Simon Frederick. What’s more, Master of Photography is going to be hosted by esteemed actress Isabella Rosselini. That alone could make it worth checking out, we reckon.

Oh, and Michael Madsen’s guesting as the resident “expert” on one episode. We’re not quite as sure what to make of that, although he did release a book of photography in 2006.

No detailed kit specifics are available yet but Leica says they will be equipping all the participants with gear from the current S, SL, and M-Systems. This is in addition to their full-frame compact camera, the Leica Q. It seems that all participants will have to use Leicas, which may make it tricky for participants who are used to using other cameras.

The show will air on 21 July 2016 in the UK and Ireland on Sky Arts, in Italy on Sky Arte HD, and in Germany and Austria on Sky Arts HD.
